What is Affiliate Marketing?

The term is widely used for those wanting to make money online. Affiliate marketing is one of the most common forms of internet marketing today. And for those who are effective in selling, affiliate marketing could rake in a considerable, if not, a bountiful income. Web sites and services offering an affiliate scheme have abounded. To an affiliate marketer, it’s only a matter of finding the one that truly works. There are different techniques to earn from affiliate marketing — from legal and ethical ones to completely black-hat techniques. However, this article is not about that.

Affiliate schemes have different compensation strategies. A marketer putting effort into marketing an affiliate program depends on whether the scheme is actually viable. Now, what are the ways with which programs pay their affiliates?

1. Cost Per Sale

With this scheme, affiliates are paid a percentage of the product sold through them. Though the frequency of your earnings might not be as frequent as the other methods (since not all who click to a product or service through you would be converted), you might earn more.

2. Cost Per Action

Cost Per Sale also falls into this more general category. Basically, Cost Per Action is as its name implies, an earning scheme with which an action (such as a sale happening or a survey or form being filled out) is required before an affiliate earns.

3. Cost Per Mille

I think this is the easiest way to earn from affiliate marketing. You just need to put a link to your web site wherein the products of your affiliate are viewable to the public and you earn from such. Of course, your earnings depend on the popularity of your web site.

4. Cost Per Click

This method means you earn every time someone clicks through the affiliate links you put on your web site.

These are some of the methods affiliate programs pay. Other than these, many program offer an affiliate tier wherein if someone signs up under you, you get a percentage of what your referral earns and what his referrals earn, up until the number in the tier as set by your affiliate program.
